Tiny Still Life
Students build a small sculpture of their choice from recycled materials, then draw it using observation skills on large paper. They finish with paint.
In this project, students explore the power of close observation by turning small, found-object sculptures into the subjects of large-scale artworks. Each student begins by creating a tiny sculpture—no larger than their hand—using a variety of everyday materials.
These miniature creations then serve as the focus for observational drawing, as students scale up their sculptures into detailed, expressive artworks. They learn to study shape, texture, and proportion closely, and complete their pieces using tempera paint to add bold color and form.
This project emphasizes the value of looking closely, turning small creations into big artistic statements.
