What We Do

We offer free and low-cost curriculum options that:

Provide Cross-Content Learning Connections

art with literacy, math, science, and social studies to deepen student engagement and comprehension.

Showcase Diverse Artists, Perspectives, & Ideas

Ensuring students encounter a broad range of voices and artistic traditions, fostering inclusivity and cultural awareness.

Are Process-Based Projects

Encouraging students to explore, take creative risks, and develop personally meaningful work that demonstrates true knowledge transfer.

Why We Do It

There are an increasing number of studies showing the potential for arts in schools to be a force for positive change.

For example, the government program Turnaround Arts worked to get art in the lowest performing 5% of schools. After three years, they found an average 22.55% increase in math and a 12.62% improvement in reading proficiency. Additionally, there was a marked reduction in behavioral problems and attendance issues. A school in New Orleans reported a 51.32% reduction in overall suspensions, and a 81.13% reduction in in-school suspensions.

Yet, paradoxically, the nation’s public schools are on a
downward trend in terms of providing students meaningful
access to the arts.
Some statistics suggest that fewer than half of adults report having participated in arts lessons or classes in school—a decline from about 65% in the 1980s.

The Doodle Difference

At Doodles Academy, we believe art is more than just an activity—it’s a powerful tool for transformation. Our curriculum is designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving, all while enhancing literacy and STEM skills. By integrating art into education, we provide children with a deeper understanding of the world around them and equip them with essential skills for the future.

Our programs also nurture emotional intelligence, allowing kids to express themselves, build confidence, and engage in meaningful learning experiences. Whether in school or afterschool, Doodles Academy’s approach helps children connect with their peers, cultures, and communities. Through art, we create opportunities for self-expression and exploration, encouraging kids to grow into creative, thoughtful, and compassionate individuals.

Where It All Began: The Story Behind Doodles Academy

Doodles Academy started nearly ten years ago, born from my own experiences as a K–5 art teacher in Brooklyn.

Back then, I kept running into the same frustrating patterns—projects where every kid made the exact same thing, and art that felt totally disconnected from the rest of the school day. The art room was treated like an island. Fun, sure—but separate. And that didn’t sit right with me.

So I started teaming up with classroom teachers to try something different.

We designed projects that connected with what students were learning in their other subjects—but in a way that still honored exploration, self-expression, and creative thinking. These weren’t cookie-cutter assignments. They were process-based, inquiry-driven projects that gave students space to ask questions, take risks, and make something truly their own.

Those early collaborations lit a spark—not just in my students, but in the way we all thought about what art education could be.

When I eventually left the classroom, I couldn’t let go of that vision. I founded Doodles Academy to keep it growing.

At first, I worked closely with schools in Portland, Oregon—co-creating curriculum that integrated art with classroom learning. Every lesson was tested in real classrooms and refined based on feedback from teachers and kids. Over time, that turned into a flexible library of lessons and resources that are free or low-cost, especially for schools that might not otherwise have access to high-quality arts programming.

Now, our home base in Ann Arbor, Michigan plays a key role in shaping that work. It’s where we try new things, test new projects, and learn directly from our community. What we discover locally helps shape what we offer nationally—connecting more and more classrooms through the power of creativity.

At Doodles Academy, we believe every child deserves the chance to see themselves as an artist, and every educator deserves the tools and support to help them get there. That belief started in one classroom—but it’s grown into something much bigger, and much brighter, than I ever imagined.
