Around the Neighborhood

Literacy

Students explore Jacob Lawrence's paintings of Harlem and, for older students, the Great Migration. Students then sketch their neighborhoods and create a collage.

In this four-lesson unit, students explore the life and work of African American artist Jacob Lawrence, with a focus on his vibrant depictions of Harlem. Through Lawrence’s bold use of color, shape, and narrative, students learn how art can capture the energy, rhythm, and everyday moments of a community.

The unit also introduces other Harlem Renaissance artists and offers recommended reading to deepen students' understanding of the time period and cultural context.

For their own artwork, students sketch scenes from their own neighborhoods and use those drawings to create collages inspired by Lawrence’s storytelling style. By the end of the unit, each student will have created a personal, expressive artwork that celebrates the people, places, and stories in their own community—revealing how the world around them can be a powerful source of artistic inspiration.
