Anthropomorphic Animals

Literacy

Students choose an animal, draw it realistically from photographs, and then use the background to show what human traits the animal has come to represent.

In this unit, students explore the concept of anthropomorphism—how animals are given human traits—and examine its use across art, literature, and pop culture. From ancient fables to modern cartoons, students discover how artists and storytellers have long used animals to reflect human behavior, emotions, and values.

Students select an animal and begin by drawing it realistically using photo references. They then design a background that reveals the human traits their animal represents, combining observational drawing with symbolic storytelling. This project builds technical drawing skills while encouraging students to think critically about symbolism and character representation.
