A Place in Space
"A Place in Space" delves into how places are shaped by design choices that reflect the values of a society at a specific moment in time. Students examine historical examples while considering how their personal spaces, like bedrooms, express their own personalities, opinions, and ideals.
In this integrated project pack, we explore the question, “What is our relationship with the buildings and the spaces that surround us?*”* through four key ideas:
1. Buildings and spaces are reflective of a particular moment in time.
2. Buildings and city design can be used to help solve a problem.
3. History is an evolving narrative that can be told, in part, through objects and places.
4. Objects, furnishings, and decorations give clues into the lives of inhabitants.

”I made my perfect bedroom with sparkly stuff and some beads and a bed that I like so much. I added a picture from a magazine that shows water and the sunset so I can hear the ocean from my bed. And I think I added a dance floor and a mirror because so I can dance in the spotlight and I can the mirror is so I know I look perfect.”

“This is a bedroom in which someone left their dirty clothes on the floor. We have an employee of the Month Picture with our Cat, Jaime. There’s a portrait of Greta over the bed. There’s also a fabric room, I wanted to make it look like a sewing room, because Sonja likes sewing. Sonja made the door that opens into the bedroom.”

“This is a pretend house I live in, and it’s a connecting room with Kotone’s. The dice are my toys, I made the pillow out of legos. And a flower wall. I also made a play area in the yellow.”
